INTRODUCTION
|
|
|
Census of India 2001 is the 14th Census in its unbroken
series, 6th after independence, (5th in case of Assam
as the Census in 1981 could not be conducted in the
State due to the then prevailing situation). This is
also the 1st Census of the 21st century and the 3rd
millennium.
Census in India is conducted in two phases viz. Housenumbering
and Houselisting operations and population enumeration.
Housenumbering and Houselisting operations was conducted
in the month of May, 2000 in the State. The period of
this operation varies form State to state as the same
is conveniently conducted in consultation with the state
Govt.
The Census of India 2001 was conducted during 9th to
28th Feb., 2001 with reference to 00 hrs. of 1st March,
2001. The houseless population was enumerated on the
night 0f 28th Feb. 2001 by each enumerator within his
or her jurisdiction. A revisional round was taken up
from 1st to 5th March, 2001 with a view to up-date the
entry by way of addition and deletion in respect of
births and deaths which may have occurred subsequent
to the earlier visit of the enumerator to such households
but before the reference moment.
It has been the tradition of the Indian Census to bring
out the Provisional Population Totals immediately after
the conclusion of the population enumeration. Therefore
Indian Census has earned a great fame for releasing
the provisional population totals in such a shortest
possible time. However, this is not a very easy task.
It requires meticulous planning and a well drilled census
machinery fully geared up for the purpose. The programme
was drawn up to have the provisional population totals
at the sate level by 9th March, 2001 for onward transmission
of the same to the Registrar General and Census Commissioner,
India by 10th March, 2001.
In the present paper an attempt has been made to show
the distribution of population, decadal variation of
population, sex ratio with its variation since 1901,
density of population and literacy rate etc. In addition
to the maps showing the administrative division of the
state along the pictorial representation of above data
are given. Various kinds of charts and diagrams on the
above themes are also shown in this paper.
